When it comes to Alice, Michael Mann seems to have been trying to portray a character closer to what the Dopers see than what the Foos do. That's what I get from reading the script, anyway.

It's interesting to me that a lot of people didn't come away with that image, in spite of his efforts. There could be a lot of reasons for that. Maybe it's the editing, or camera angles. I tend to think that because her character was left so much in the background, it invites all sorts of interpretation. Personally, I think that is one of the things that makes it fun to watch the film over and over.

Same with Alice's relationship with Uncas. You're free to decide the depth of their feelings, because there's nothing on the screen to settle it. In my opinion, even Uncas's efforts to save Alive could be open to an interpretation other than romantic love. But I prefer the romantic angle.

Hawkeye and Cora are portrayed in such a powerful, straight-forward way, it's a nice contrast to leave the Alice and Uncas shrouded in a bit of mystery.
