: Dear Gayle,

you wrote: Hi Vita,

: Since you got such a bang out of the Scotto/Alice thing in the Courier, I thought you would enjoy this little passage I came across this weekend in Kenneth Roberts' "Arundel".

: "She was as sweet as a cluster of arbutus with the leaves peeled off; fresh and pink and delicious; and her bright hair bound around her head like a rope. She was so soft in her gray gown that if I'd taken her by the waist I'd have looked for her to hang limp across my arm, like my sister's cashmere shawl."

: This is the female the hero spent the better part of the book getting beat up for. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Der gayle, i could write you pages about this paragraph...
It really IS intererestng that ladies who know how to faint, how
to drape themselves around their sweeitheart's shoulders like a
shawl, do got a lot of attention, care, and very often, admiration.
Those ladies who are go-getters, self-sufficient, strong enough
to be a shawl which can stand up on its own volition without
being draped around anyone's shoulders, do seem to get the shorter end of the stick, just BECAUSE they are strong and
self-sufficient. In other words, due to their reputation of being
strong and self-sufficient, when the time comes an they do need
the strong shoulder to lean on, voila! there's none, for the
knight can not for the life of him imagine let alone see, that
she too has her limits and needs a partner walking next to her
rather than a...
anyhow, Gayle, I am getting too philosophical in my observation
here. But Alices of the world do have it a bit easier than the
Coras, and again it is more for Alice's hidden strength that we
speculated about than Cora's, whom, even I, did accuse just a
tad of being overprotective and thus not allowing the poor wee
girl to be herself.
Hmmmm.
A lot to mull over!
Meanhile, Michael Mann, for God's sake do release the
Director's Cut!
The natives are getting restless here!
We need another version of LOTM to eat and drink!

walk in love and light,
Vita
