: I've read the Soldier description of how hard it was to switch places in the canoe scene, but can somebody please explain to me WHY they would have switched places at all? Thanks.

Claudia,
Gee, all of the answering posts talk about why Uncas would "jump" from one canoe to another canoe; I read your post as "why WHEN Eric finally got into the second canoe, did he need to switch places with Soldier #2?"
Some possible answers:
a) it "looked" better to have Uncas in the back paddling
b) Soldier #2 was tired of making the motor "work" and was glad to hand the job over
c) Uncas missed his mark when entering the second canoe and had to move around soldier #2 to get to it
d) they both like to dance
e) Uncas was still upset that Hawkeye took over his original first place in the lead canoe and felt he had to get out and at least get the second most important "last place" position in the second canoe.
d) general confusion
e) only Soldier #2 knows and he needs to post!
