: Oh, one last thing ... sheepishly, I must finally admit something. This week, we added the "Going west to Can-tuck-ee" sound file to our Download Page. Listening to it, I can clearly hear, for the first time, Hawkeye say, "... sudden-like." Oh, woe is me!

So, Rich, now you say you hear it clearly. Ummmmmm??? Are you correct now, or were you correct before?

Well, of course, in defense of all things fair, it must be stated that simply because you say you now hear "sudden-like", as opposed to your earlier hearing of "subtle-like", you are no more or less correct than you were previously. And we all know it does depend on your definition of the word "clearly", or perhaps even more precisely on your definition of the word "can", as in "can clearly hear."

Who of us can judge what you can hear, after all? That is a private matter between your ear and your brain. And you do say it was your first time, although I find that a little hard to swallow. But there is no evidence otherwise. (Elaine.....?)
So,it seems to me that you are apparently correct, just as you were before you could hear clearly. And I think most Americans would clearly understand things just as you do now.

As a card-carrying member of The Vast Conspiracy of Word Nerds, I do delight in your new discovery. And however you came to your new understanding,(whether through clear hearing, or rational analysis), I applaud you. I feel compelled to state, however, that to us in The Conspiracy, it is unimportant what we hear, because we are rigid, and proud of it. We have made our decision on this subtle/sudden matter based on the fact that we simply will not entertain the notion that the word "subtle" could ever be used in a manner which we believe makes no sense. What we lack in imagination, we make up for in conviction. If we in The Conspiracy cannot understand it, it cannot be happening, even if we did hear it. Hence, Hawkeye didn't say it.

I hope you will see the point of this post, which is that you are forgiven for having an opinion. No.... that is not it exactly. I have decided it is not important, and we should all move on. I suddenly find this admission of yours concerning what you can clearly hear to be somewhat confusing, but I'm not parsing, really!! Just spinning like a top. In fact, I feel a little dizzy.

Oh, darn it, I'm just trying to say you are right no matter what you heard. And so is the folks in The Conspiracy. (meaning is, as in always was, or whatever suits me). How could anyone possibly be wrong? But please keep your sheep out of it. We have enough to consider without introducing animals into the conversation. That seems clearly inappropriate. Further hearings should not be necessary, clear or otherwise.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek,
Clear-as-mud Kathy
