Howdy, BillyGnome! Yes, I was thinking this morning how it was one short week ago that we were heading up the cliff trail about now. I remembered, particularly, how you had always said you doubted you could do that climb, and how I had always promised I would stick with you & get you up that trail, no matter how long, no matter how far.
Little did I know that when the opportunity to do that finally arrived, only ONE of us would make it to the top! One week ago, you, Betty, Diana & I set out to slowly & steadily make our way along behind most (all??) of the other Gatherers, me assuring you every step of the way that you could do it. It was like the Turtle Clan does the Cliff Trail as we slowly crept along...me hot & sweaty & gasping for breath, and you shaking in your gnomie boots with fear & trepidation at every step. I would walk ahead a bit (maybe 2 yards!) and wait for you to tackle another few steps. Then...slowly but surely, you were keeping pace with me easily, and only moments after that, you had passed me by!
"What's THIS?" I asked myself...The guy hanging on to the rails with both hands & muttering frantically to himself is leaving my sorry behind in the DUST!! I made one more valiant effort to catch up with the head Turtle, but...alas! The heat & humidity & my bad knees did me in. After at least eight treks to the top of that Trail, I had to admit defeat! Thank goodness for Diana (always my saviour!) who escorted me back down the trail to safety, then nimbly caught right back up with the rest of the group. I sat out the climb with Yolanda on the deck outside the Sky Lounge, and was perfectly happy to do so. Boy, am I gettin' old, or WHAT??
Anyway, Gnomie, I couldn't be more proud of you! You stuck to it, and by golly, you DID it! You conquered sweltering heat, freezing rains & deathly fear to make it full circle on the cliff trail & see with your own eyes where so much of our favorite film took place. Three cheers for GnomeDome's steadfast determination! Good on ya, Mate!
