Why research the basic story - and then allow discrepancies in other areas such as uniforms, type of cannon used, incorrect battle formation, etc.? For a not unintelligent sounding man, he doesn't seemed to have grasped the fact that inaccuracies and inattention to these details can ruin the whole movie for some people. This means adverse comments and reviews, which in turn leads to smaller box office revenue...

Hi Kate,
I agree with you. But then, given how understanding he sounds about conspiracy theorists, maybe it shouldn't surprise if he doesn't seem to have grasped certain facts, as you put it nicely. Also, I just noticed that the article I tried to link to the other night didn't show up. It was a British article (your neck of the woods, right? :) and ended with Mel's statement of "It's just a movie.." So much for the seriosity of his "research", I suppose... Oh well... ;)
