Doc M highly recommends all of Sharyn McCrumb's books. She
lives in the Blue Ridge Mts. in Virginia, around Blacksburg,
I believe, and she loves the old mountain legends and the
people. I like her "ballad" series the best -- they're
set in a small Tennessee town in the Great Smokey Mts.,
right across the border from NC. They don't have to be
read in order, but to understand the interplay among her
characters it helps. If Ever I Return (1990), Hangman's
Beautiful Daughter (1991), She Walks These Hills (1994),
Rosewood Casket (1997), and Ballad of Frankie Silver (1998).

Her Elizabeth MacPherson mystery series is very different
in tone, and very funny. Again, probably better if they're
read in order: Sick of Shadows (84), Lovely In Her Bones (85),
Highland Laddie Gone (86), Paying The Piper(88), Windsor Knot(90), Missing Susan (91), MacPherson's Lament (92),If I Had
Killed Him (95). She's coming out with a new one called
PMS Outlaws in Sept., which I'll be waiting for.
