: : : Tawny Port is lighter in body and drier in taste than regular port. It is smooth and mellow on the rocks or at room temperature, it is for cocktails or for after dinner. Some people do not care for it, although I find it quite pleasing to me. I do believe, though, of the three...madeira, port, or tawny port...I prefer port.

: : Dear Seamus and Vita,
: : Having been introduced to Madeira wine on the island of Madeira about 10 years ago, I have to say that it is the finest sipping wine I have ever tasted! I treat myself to one bottle a year at Christmas. If you like sweet wines, Vita, try this. Port is also very good. I too prefer it to tawny port. I would be interested in your opinion if you try one of these.

: Dear Chris, Seamus and Vita,

: It's been a few years since I have visited Portugal, but I do believe that port and tawny port are branches of the same tree. The difference is the age of the port. If I remember correctly the tour I took in the port caves in Porto, Portugal (how's that for alliteration), there are 3 ages for port: young, middle age, and old. I am pretty sure that "tawny" refers to the old age port, and I think they let it age for about 30 years.

: Anyway, I do adore port and Portugal, obviously (I would love to retire there); and this thread brings back some good travelling memories :) Any American that wants to visit Europe, I would strongly advise you to go to Portugal. It must be one of the most friendly and hospitable places in Western Europe.

Ilse, I am going bust now!
any minute am going to hop into a taxi and... drive...
you know, I don't even have beer?
got some wine, about a glass of Wild Vines Raspberry Zinfandel...
OK, I shall resist it for another hour or so.

By the way, if ever you want to travel a bit more South, try Turkey, try Bodrum (Halikarnas) which is at the corner where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, and my son is there, handsome darling young man, about the wed his third wife, hey, this kid had two marriages and two divorces and his two ex' still adore him as the best friend they ever had...
anyhow, so, go to Halikarnas and my kid, Kurt Bekem aka Kuki, will love to walk you around...
