Why didn't they all jump?

Hi all, I'm another newbie... I absolutely love Mann's LOTM, one of my all time favorite films. I have one question about it that I've never been able to answer to my satisfaction, though. It seems like it must be a pretty basic question, so I apologize if this one's been tossed about too many times already, but I couldn't find it in the archives in a cursory check.

When our heroes hid under the falls and Magua's search party found them, why did only Hawkeye, Uncas, and Chingachgook jump to escape? WHy did the others stay behind?
