: Greetings Penny,
: Welcome to the board! If my memory serves me correctly (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), Michael Mann brought back some of the cast months after shooting had been finished in order to reshoot some scenes. One being the scene where Uncas looks longingly at Alice at the Riverwalk. Thus the earring got switched. Terribly memory these movie people have sometimes....
: Hope this helps!

Caitlin,
Your very close. They did bring back some of the actors later, but both Eric and Russell wore rings in their left ear through out the movie. (still stuck with those 20th century beliefs about left ear, right ear) The negative was turned around in that scene. It happens again in the elk hunt where Hawkeyes wampum and bag strap swap shoulders during his run. The truth about ear piercing is that when one became a man, he had both ears and his nose pierced. (I`ll just stick to the ears thank ya very much) Then more piercings were added to his ears in time. In the 18th century navies, ear piercing was a "right of passage" after sailing around the Horn of Africa. So many, many men wore earrings back then but it was we, the 20th century, that made it a female thing.
Sorry, I got carried away.
