: : : Last Wednesday my friends and I decided to do some sight-seeing
: : : in our own backyard,so to speak. We went to South Street Seaport,
: : : which we weren't particularly impressed with, when we found ourselves
: : : standing in front of a guided map to all points of interest in Manhattan. Why the whole island is one big tourist trap! No matter how long you live here you can always find something you didn't know was right in front of you, and sure enough right across the street from Battery Park was the National Museum of the American Indian-Smithsonian Institute.
: : : There was more to see than time to take it all in. Those responsible
: : : for putting together the exhibits where from the different Nations of the Original People. What a wealth of information! One of the many exhibits I was awed by was seeing the buckskin shirts of Crazy Horse and Spotted Tail and the time and care they take to teach of their way of life and the changes in life-styles that have caused them to realize the importants of not only teaching their own childern but all people of their way of life.
: : : Anyone living in the area or making a trip to NYC, should make this Museum a must see! Oh and did I mention, IT'S FREE! ENJOY!!
: : : Stay Strong with Love, Kathleen

: : Hi Kathleen,
: : That's EXACTLY what my sister and I did, when we were in NYC two Christmases ago (ostensibly 'Chrismas shopping - well, that's what we told THEM!!) but we 'did' all the sights you can see in four day - AND THEN SOME!!! And this wonderful museum was one of the things we made a point of seeing!!! (Even did 'Starbucks' next door!! :0)
: : As you so rightly say, we didn't have near enough time to see all we wanted so had a cursory look, with promises to 'do' it again next visit!! And I'll keep going back till I've see it all!! You're absolutely RIGHT! It's something EVERYONE should see!!
: : Thanks for that trip down memory lane - and a reminder of great holiday!
: : Kate.
: Hi all,
: If any of you get to the Northwest, the University of British Columbia Anthropology Museum in Vancouver is wonderful too. Not only do they have a fantastic display of NW Coast art, but their stored collection is in huge glass cases, so you can enjoy that too. The stored pieces are not labeled, except with a number, but if you are persistent, you can look the numbers up in their catalog and get all the pertinent information. It seems like a wonderful idea to me, and I wish all museums were able to do that.
I had heard about this museum but still have never been! I have a lot of college friends still living in the NYC area so I'll definitely have to make this a stop next time I'm up there. If you're in the Southwest ever, hit the Heard museum in Phoenix. (I mentioned it a few posts ago and it's just like you describe the NYC museum...it's hard to take everything in...)
