: On this day in 1921 The Irish Free State was declared as part of an historic peace agreement with Great Britain. In the late 1940s, Eamon de Valera, the prime minister of Ireland, led the opposition to Ireland's status as a member of the British Commonwealth, and in 1949, the Irish Free State severed all ties with Britain and was renamed the Republic of Eire. Conflicts persisted, however, and the Irish Republican Army, outlawed in the south, went underground to try to regain the six northern counties still ruled by Britain. So....the thought for today is......

: "It doesn't take courage to shoot a policeman in the back of the head or to murder an unarmed taxi driver. What takes courage is to compete in the arena of democracy as these men and women are tonight. The tools are persuasion, fairness and common sense."

: (former U.S. senator and peace talks chairman George Mitchell's reaction to the Northern Ireland Peace Accord)

Very wise words Huggy. Unfortunately, not enough people listened. The bloodshed continues today..it's so sad, especially for the innocent victims.
