: : What are the ingredients of gun powder?

Typically saltpeter (pottasium nitrate) sulphur and charcoal in varying combinations. Early gunpowder back in the 1600's was very weak compared to later gunpowder. Later gunpowder was stronger and more reliable. Corning of the powder and grinding it made it better. Corning it involved wetting it down and drying it then grinding it. Sifting it for uniform size.

That is a thumbnail sketch in answer.
