:
: December ye 24th 1758

: Cpl. Malcolm MacWilliam
: Pvt. Davey Gunn
: 77th Highlanders, Montgomery’s,
: Grenadier Company
: Winter Quarters at Rea’s Town

: My dear Cousins!

: Sign Talker waits patiently to bring this to you with a message from Flags...

: We have just returned from the wedding of Many Flags and Magdalena, and while Nancy is preparing a meal, I wanted to let you know that the worst is behind me, and I am going to be fine. It will take some time, but I get stronger each day. The broths Nancy prepares for me and Uncle Quasi’s amber liquid are miracle workers! I am able to use my arms and legs now for short periods.

: I must tell you this...I have told no one else. My last memory before I found myself here was of poor Wee John and his terrible violent death. I remember screaming, “NO! My God, no!” and charging forward. The next thing I knew I was here, and had no idea how I got here. I do have a very strange, almost twilight recollection...a dream...of seeing Wee John and you, Malcolm, floating above my bed. Wee John had an angelic smile on his face...which was quite pale, by the way...and as he floated toward me his eyes shone like small candles. I saw him bend his head forward and kiss me on the forehead, right where my wound is, and then you both floated away and disappeared. I opened my eyes and heard a beautiful Christmas hymn being sung, by whom I knew not, but as I sat up, I saw my Nancy at the fireplace stirring a pot. When she turned and saw me, she came to me and hugged me, crying...oh, so hard. It was she who told me of my wound, your wounds, and how we all were under the Death Watch, and all that has happened since that day. I was so happy to hear that you have healed. I understand, Cousins, how I have survived. Now I must search for the reason, WHY?... Perhaps, someday, I will be able to answer that question.

: I am sorry you could not attend the wedding. It was as nice a wedding as I have seen, and we partied on and on until we were exhausted! The Uncles were in their glory! (Quasi has his eye on one of Magdalena’s sisters, but the Reverend Gottshall watches closely!) We had to return just to rest...and I, to ponder... Cousins, as soon as I am well, Nancy and I will wed. We have discussed it and agreed it WILL happen!

: Flags and MacFarland are coming here to hunt in 2 days. It will be great to spend some time with them. Nancy has stayed in Allemangel for awhile, so it will be just the men here. The snow is fresh and the tracks of the deer will be easy to see. I will likely spend my time sitting on the porch, since I am not quite yet up to tromping through the woods.

: It is so beautiful here with the snow covering the forest, and so quiet. I look out the window upon white pines, their branches laden with the fresh snow, the laurel bent under the weight. At night, the clear skies show every star, and I can easily imagine the night, long ago when the three wisemen followed the Star across the vastness to that little stable in Bethlehem. I can see them, as they alighted from their camels and entered that Holy place, and laid their gifts for the Christ Child at the manger. We will celebrate that night tomorrow in our own ways, and each of us will be touched by His Spirit. I have been, and I know it...

: May the blessings of the Christmas Season be with you throughout the coming year, dear Cousins, and may God watch over and protect you from harm, so that you may return to your loved ones in Scotland.
