Wee John MacKay

Davey Gunn and I hope that you find this message. We have sent a Cherokee scout to the area where you should be heading into, to nail this message to a tree.

Brother Gunn and I have interceded with the Captain concerning your request to return to the 77th Grenadiers. Capt. Croy is concerned that this will set a precedent, men leaving the regiment, coming and going at will.

However, the Captain also believes that you have been of great service, you and Uncle Angus and the sheep, to our cause. So, he wishes you to know that if you can prove yourself worthy to come back into the ranks of the Grenadiers, then you will be welcomed by your Scottish brethern.

"Proving yourself worthy" will mean doing some service for your comrades and your King. Therefore, Brother Gunn and I would suggest that you come close to our camp here at Loyalhanna, be watchful, be wary, and when the opportunity arises for you to "prove yourself", do your best, Wee John MacKay. Strike hard and fierce!

Give our heartfelt regards to our Uncle Angus and have him be on his toes, for we fear that an attack may come from the Savages and French at any time.

May St. Andrew lead you along the path of reinstitution in this Regiment!

Pax Aye! God Save the King!

Corporal MacWilliam and Pvt. Gunn
