: : You find the strangest stories on the internet. I've been doing some research for awhile on Chief Joseph Brandt, mainly because he and his tribe settled in my part of Ontario. One search turned up a web site with a story about Major General Arthur St. Clair's daughter Luisa and how Joseph Thayendanega (Brandt) became 'smitten' with her. Interesting story. The url is below for those who might be interested.

OK, Jeri--

Got the chaff out of the way, now here's the wheat!

One of the best books on Joseph Brant is

Joseph Brant
1743-1807
Man of Two Worlds

written by Isabel Thompson Kelsay; Syracuse University Press, 1984

ISBN 0-8156-0208-1 (pbk.)

On page 424, you will see that is was Isaac, the son, not Joseph, who fell smitten with Luisa. Another version of the tale names Joseph's younger son, John, as the love-struck warrior, however, he was not born until 1788.(She references this with an end note )

Of course, the tale goes on as stated in your reference: that St. Clair's life was spared because of the lad's love for Luisa.(also end-noted ) BUT--as Kelsay says, this does not sound like the bad-tempered Isaac, who very likely had a wife of his own. In addition, there is no evidence that Luisa was even at Ft. Harmar at the time.

This story, I believe, is just that---fiction.

I hope this helps. Please get this book, if you can, because it is a fabulous study of this great warrior...and one of my heroes!
Kelsay's references will steer you onto other works on Joseph Brant, also.

Have fun!!
