: : : : And a very happy Thanksgiving Day to all my Canadian 'rellies'!! Have a wonderful one!! :o)

: : : : Kate

: : : Hi Kate!!

: : : Thank you sooo much!!! When do you celebrate Thanksgiving Day in Scotland?

: : :
: : : Bea

: : ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

: : Hi Bea,
: : We don't! :o) Thanksgiving Day celebrates the pilgrims landing safely in the New World and their giving thanks for getting safely out of England, to a new world where they could be free to practice their religion etc. without being persecuted. Back then, the English didn't view it in quite the same way, so didn't tend to join in their thanks and didn't set this day aside as a holiday! :o)

: : Of course, many, many Scots travelled to the New World, particularly during the Highland Clearances, and no doubt they joined hands with the Pilgrims and thanked God for delivering them from evil.

: : However, all that is in the past, and though it ISN'T a holiday here, we do recognise that others on the other side of the pond are celebrating and thanking God for 'a safe harbour and a bountiful harvest' and generally, we on THIS side wish you all a very happy day!!

: : But - 'old habits die hard'!! Around this time of year, I STILL feel a strong urge to cook turkey etc.!!

: Hi Kate,

: :) Yes, I was certainly aware of that but it was also known to me that Germany for example, celebrates a ERNTEDANKFEST. The meaning is different but not that far off. On this day people give thanks in church for a good harvest and we did that as well in our church yesterday. For us the focus is more or less to be thankful for the good things in life whether them being food or friends etc. Well, I am certainly very grateful for this board and the special people that go with it. Many of them have been absolutely wonderful ( and yes, you guys know who you are..smile)

: Thankful Bea

Yes, I understand what you're saying here and we have 'Harvest Sunday' in church, where we give thanks for that boutiful harvest. Yes, you're absolutely right! It IS a time to give thanks for all good things in our lives, especially the wonderful friends that we have that keep us going through thick and thin, particularly the very special people here in Mohicanland. I too consider myself VERY LUCKY indeed, to be a part of this Board.

Hope all my Canadian friends had a truly blessed day, eh?

Love,
Kate.
