: Loyalhanna
: October ye 13th, 1756

: To: Nancy, the dark-haired lass
: On the Chilisquaque Creek, Near Ft. Augusta

: My Dear Nancy,

: I am at a loss as to what to tell you at this time. I guess it is best that I simply give it as it is....

: Seamus has been gravely wounded in a ferocious battle yesterday with the French and their Indians here at this place, and the Surgeons have told me that it is only a matter of time until he is gone. He has a terrible wound to the head. The ball has lodged and is causing a pressure, which, unless removed, will prove fatal in a short time. The attempt to remove it also will be a fatal move if not done correctly, and the danger is great. The Surgeons, while competent, are overworked. The carnage was awful. All of the MacWilliam boys are gravely wounded, as is Wee John MacKay, the lad who disappeared on our trip to Ft. Loudon. It seems he was found and has been taken care of by Angus, and yesterday, he fought like a demon. He and Red Leaf went hand to hand, with Wee John mortally wounding the savage with a blow from a ram’s horn, and then the mongrel was trampled to pulp by Angus’s sheep.

: Many of the 77th were wounded or killed. The Company street is full of them. Many Flags, Three Tales, Malcolm and Davey are all under the deathwatch, Nancy, along with your beloved Seamus, my son. Flags is nearly gone; he has taken on the pallor of death. Davey and Tales seem to be holding on, and Malcolm is delirious. Some have more than one wound. Seamus is breathing slowly and shallow, very laboriously, and with each breath, we think it is his last. His color is not good either. I am so glad that he and I were able to make our peace and put the past behind.

: I know your first inclination will be to come here to this place, but it is unrealistic. It is much too far and much too dangerous a journey for you. I am here, Nancy, to watch over him and help what I can to make him comfortable as possible. I will keep you informed as to his situation, and but I must advise you to be prepared for the worst, my dear. It does not look good at all.

: It is all in God’s hands...

Jeez Lou-STEENking weeze, to borrow a phrase I believe from Miss MMMarcia, when I leave to go west it's romance and loooovee flyin around, and I come back and all the heroes are a-dyin! Not another noble hero heading to his great reward ... (this seems to happen in every book and movie I read or see lately...) pass the hankies...
