This day in 1768....

English cavalry sergeant Philip Astley staged the first modern circus, performing elaborate feats on the backs of horses racing around a ring. Giant tent shows toured America throughout the nineteenth century, while smaller circuses flourished worldwide. The last major additions were flying trapeze and high-wire acts, introduced around 1860.

So the thought is.....

Whatever you do, do it with all your might. Work at it, early and late, in season and out of season, not leaving a stone unturned, and never deferring for a single hour that which can be done just as well now.

(P.T. Barnum, Entrepreneur, Politician & Circus Imressario, 1810-1891)
