: PC: French seams enclose the raw edges, so there's no surging :involved. The shirt ends up as beautiful on the inside as it :is on the outside.

Yes, this is why I do it with French seams rather than leaving them "loose". It takes more time but it gives greater satisfaction.

:I'm not familiar with the book you mentioned.

Beth Gilgun's book? It's "Tidings from the 18th Century" -- I'm sure you can get it from this website, as with many other useful books. It contains useful information and instructions for clothing and many other items necessary for 18thC living. It is a reenactor's "must-have".

:I actually designed my own pattern after looking at drawings and :studying descriptions. I decided that no self respecting :frontier wife would depend on a commercial pattern to make her :husband an everyday shirt. I also made adjustments and changes :that were specifically for my husband's build.

I just use written instructions, which are certainly proper to do. Beth's, and someone else's sent to me by a friend. Each allows for fitting to the person (height, width, arm length, etc.) for custom fitting.

Well done on finishing your shirt!
