Surprises are one thing never lacking around here. We've had plenty of them in the past 4 years. Some come out of nowhere. This week, we were pleasantly surprised, but there were many indications beforehand that this "surprise" might occur. I had said, that if pre-Gathering interest was any indication, we were in for a large turnout. This week was a prime example of Gathering Fever, or Mohican Mania, or something! The week was filled with a Gathering aura, and so, that's what I'll talk about this week.

The 4th Annual Great Mohican Gathering now boasts an expected attendance of 93 ... and rising ... people. To put that in perspective, Gathering One had 38 people. Two had 52. Three had 83. We're only a few days into the reservation period, so, who knows? It WILL slow down. Most everyone we expected might sign up has. There are a few more floating around out there, plus, I'm sure, there'll be a few who discover the event over the next several months and sign on. Too, unfortunately, there might be a cancellation or two. I think, though, that we'll probably total in the area of 110 attendees this year.

Here's the breakdown, so far:

4th Gathering: 16
3rd Gathering: 14
2nd Gathering: 30
1st Gathering: 33

A wonderful mix of "veterans" & "newcomers". It was suggested last year that I bring a megaphone. I will. Those of us who speak to the group as a whole will NEED it! Especially at The River Walk and Linville, with the roar of the Falls!

For your info, in response to some questions we've had, here's the breakdown of the 4 days' activities:

(When fees are mentioned, we do NOT include gas or meals, unless provided. Names of scene locations from "On The Trail Of The Last Of The Mohicans".)

Thurday, June 14 - The most rugged hiking & physically demanding day, in that it is fairly non-stop. But then, it is the soul of the LOTM filming ... No fee/no limit

* The Opening & Closing Vistas
* The Last of the Mohicans
* The Escort
* The Ambush
* parts of Canoes
* part of Under The Falls
* Lake George & Fort William Henry

Friday, June 15 - Hiking in the AM ... No fee/no limit ... An afternoon & evening of relative rest & relaxation at Cedar Creek ... Package #3 ($25 - potluck & concert)/No limit - Package #4 ($35 - potluck, concert, & horseback riding)/limit of approx. 50

* The Elk Hunt
* Tracking The War Party

Saturday, June 16 - All day at the Falls of the River Walk. Very little hiking, as all the falls are in the same area with good access. No fee/no limit ... Movie at night $10/expected limit of between 80-85

* The River Walk
* part of Canoes
* part of Under The Falls
* part of Rescue

Sunday, June 17 - A Day at Chimney Rock Park, plus raffles, etc. at night ... Package #1 ($50.15 - all day admission, 3 full meals, souvenir)/no limit - Package #2 ($ varies depending on your selection - all day admission, 3 full meals, souvenir, 5 nights accommodation)/limit approx. 108

* The Huron Village
* The Cliffs

Driving gets progressively less as the 4 days pass ... first day has the most, 4th day, if you stay in Chimney Rock Village, has virtually none.

So far, MOST sign-ups have elected to stay at The Geneva! Don't forget, check-in is on Wednesday, June 13 ... late afternoon & evening. Look for the patrolling Soldier #2!

Much to be done still, but the path is lined with gold! Looks like a real good event! Interested? Don't miss the boat! Sign up!

E-Mail Of The Week: Though I STRONGLY suspect that this was sent just for this purpose, I will oblige. Here's your 15 minutes of fame, whoever sent this!

With all the hubabaloo over The 2001 Gathering (and a couple of household birthdays thrown in), there was little time for anything else on the Site this week. Will rectify that shortly.

You know what? I miss Doctor Mary!
