: : : Hey, folks! We have to stop this conversation about picking nits. As a school nurse I pick far more than my share of nits, but we're on vacation now. Hmmm...my head is beginning to itch. ARRGGGG!
: : : :o)

: : Ooooh, Chris!

: : Even the IDEA that your head is itchy, is making MINE feel like it's 'crawling' too!! Uuuugh!!! (Hey, the kids don't call you 'the nit nurse' as the call the school nurses here, do they???)

: : Kate.

:
: Egads, NO!! Thank goodness. I do enough other things with the kids that they don't associate me only with that. Ugh! That would be enough to make me quit the job. With a reputation like that, how do they ever get nurses to hire?

Like you, the nurses in the schools here perform a great variety of tasks, ie. vaccinations, treated 'wounded' schoolchildren etc., but in a much darker past, 'checking for nits' was a thing they had to do quite regularly, hence the school nurse came to be known as 'the nit nurse'!! And though that 'term' has a bit of a derisory ring to it, school nurses were treated with a great deal of respect!

Now, thank goodness, the instances of nits is not nearly so common and that 'name' is used almost as a 'term of endearment'!! :o) It is often preceded with 'remember, in the old days...'

Well, there doesn't SEEM to be a problem about recruiting nurses for schools ...

Kate.
