To Lt. Col. John Armstrong
Augusta Regt. Prov.
Commanding
Dearest Uncle,
I have received word through Seamus that you are well and that your Regt.has increased it's numbers since we last spoke? I wish to offer my congratulations! I also offer my apology, for it has been too long
in the writing of this letter,so much has conspired in such a short time! I feel compelled to inform you that something has happened to my brother Ian, thrice, he has been sent to the halberds to be flogged for dereliction of duty, and as if that weren't bad enough, the second whipping he received was by my own hand!! I tell you Uncle, Ian has changed, it is as if he is touched in the head? One minute he's standing there playing the drum commands as ordered than the next, his drum lay silent and he is wageing combat with the enemy!! Capt. Croy has spoken to me on this matter and has reminded me that "he will not put the Regt.at risk over one mans revenge" of which I'm inclined to agree! However, due to illness throughout the army this past winter, he will only grant Ian a unit transfer and not a discharge. My thought was to transfer him to your Regt. where you could discharge him sending him home to look after our Mother! Clever, don't you think? I don't know if you have been coresponding with my Mother but she has been having some difficulties shortly after you left her in Carlisle. It seems that the bank has frozen the trust we made for her well being because she has no man to keep after the balance! My Regt. is preparing to march onward to Ft. Frederick soon and I will not be able to come to her aid!! Can you offer your assistance in this?
