:: Hey, Chris...is that for real? I saw elk in Oregon & Washington...is Alaska too far north for them? I know you guys have MOOSE (MEESE?) though, because when I lived in Whittier, Alaska, I saw one with my very own two eyebulbs! Yowzer! That was ONE BIG COW! But no elk? That's interesting. Now, one more question, oh Woman of the Wild North, are caribou the same as reindeer? And elk are wapiti, right? I MUST LEARN MY UNGULATES!!! All we have down here are white-tailed deer & Key deer, and they look pretty much alike, except for the Key deer are eeensy with big, wide feet.

: Oh, I lied about the "one" question...I have more. What about mountain goats and bighorn sheep? Too far north for them, too? Where we lived, we saw more of the marine wildlife than the big game. We often saw whales from our living room window.

Hi Marcia,
Well, I wasn't 100% correct. Eons ago, someone transplanted 8 Roosevelt elk to Afognak and Raspberry Islands near Kodiak. There is still a small herd of elk there. They don't live on mainland Alaska at all. You are right when you say they are wapiti.
Alaska has lots of moose. We see them in Anchorage weekly and have had them browsing the shrubs in our yard. We also have black bears, grizzly bears, and wolves in Anchorage, but we don't often see them.
Caribou and reindeer are basically the same animal, but reindeer are domesticated and caribou aren't. The reindeer are found in NW Alaska, and they are generally smaller than caribou.
We have mountain goats, but no bighorn sheep. The wild sheep we have are Dall sheep. We also have musk oxen, lynx, a number of different kinds of foxes, beaver, and lots of other small animals.
When my kids were little, they never even bothered to look when we saw moose, but the first time they saw cows, they went nuts. Sometime when it's not time for me to go to bed, ask me about the validity of national standardized testing of students, and remind me about the cows.
Turnin' in.
Chris
PS- Thanks anyway, but I think I'll stay somewhere where we don't have gators, snakes, rats, and the like.
:o)
C.
