: I am writing a paper about the historical accuracy of the film and wanted to have a few comments from others interested in this subject. I am reading the material available on this site now, but would like some personal opinions.

Well, here's my 2 or 3 cents worth ...

First off, I hope you've read our History Section, where you can get many of your historical bearings straight. Be sure, too, to read the comments Major Bray & Mark Baker have offered on this topic in the tail end of the Script Section.

Overall, when it comes to the "setting" ... i.e. weapons (Killdeer being an obvious exception), tattoos, hair styles, dress & uniform, etc., great care was taken to ensure historical accuracy. There are always going to be those who are going to point out, in their opinion, that this or that was not 100% period correct. That's ok ... I strongly feel that this film gives an excellent peek into the 18th century frontier.

That said, rememember that "The Last of the Mohicans" is fiction, albeit HISTORICAL fiction. Some of the characters are real; some are not; others are loosely adapted from one or more real people. The seige of Fort William Henry really did occur, in somewhat similar fashion to that which is depicted on film ... down to the orientation of the Fort to the French artillery, etc. The Massacre, though it did happen (some early historical accounts even telling it in much the same way as what you see), did not, in fact, happen this way. I've always felt that it much more closely resembled Braddock's Defeat in Pennsylvania. Soon, I will make my case, on this site, as we work out a narrative of that battle, and compare it to that which you see when watching "The Last of the Mohicans."

Hope that helps you out a bit ...
