Unca or Chingachgook

I am trying to sort this out. In the film Unca dies and Chingachgook is the "last of the Mohicans." In real life what happened? Didn't Unca become the creator of the tribe? Need help to understand this. I have checked "Betrayals" out of the library and starting to give it a read.
