Confused about Uncas

If Chingachgook and Uncas were ficitonal characters in the book, why is Uncas referred to in the letter from Seamus posted on this site on the 17th? I found another article on the web that credits Uncas with creating the tribe in the early 17th century after leading a rebellion against the Pequot Indians.
