Dear Lory,

Here we're getting into literal history of the tribes, and that is not a strong point with me. I know Uncas was a traditional tribal name, and that there was, historically, an Uncas. However, the characters in Cooper's novels are based on various concepts and prototypes, but did not exist in reality. As to Chingachgook, the prototype may have been an Indian named Tschoop. There is information on him in our Mohican Musings section and fairly extensive discussion of him in the Archives. This is where I have to ask for help from Elaine and Rich. Their historical knowledge and familiarity with the Mohicanpress website far exceeds mine.
