Lory,

I reenact as Pvt. Chauncey Goodrich and I wrote the letter TO Seamus that you refer to. Are you familiar with the ongoing MacWilliam Chronicles posted here -- a brilliant running story made up by Mike (who is Seamus MacWilliam and others) and by Mark Hagenbuck (who is Malcolm MacWilliam and others) and by many more people. Pvt. Chauncey Goodrich occassionally appears in the story as friends of the MacWilliams -- I do reenacting as Pvt. Chauncey, a member of Rogers Rangers, just as Mike and Mark do reenacting under a variety of names.

Anyway, I wrote the letter to Seamus about "Brother Uncas" as a way of telling what was going on in April 1759. I quoted directly from the Journals of Robert Rogers (founder of Rogers' Rangers), who did indeed write letters to someone named Uncas, for the purpose of recruiting Mahican Indians. I don't know which Uncas he was writing to, but as Elaine and Gayle said and as your research has shown, Uncas was a known name in the Mahican/Mohican and Mohegan tribes. Rogers' Uncas was 100 years after the more famous Mohegan Sachem Uncas. Rogers uses the term "Brother" ("Brother Uncas") because that is how they addressed each other, not because they were in any way related.

So in this case, the Uncas referred to in the letter TO Seamus was real in 1759, but was NOT the subject of any book by JF Cooper nor of any Hollywood movies.

Hope that helps.

Regards,
Sarah M.

: If Chingachgook and Uncas were ficitonal characters in the book, why is Uncas referred to in the letter from Seamus posted on this site on the 17th? I found another article on the web that credits Uncas with creating the tribe in the early 17th century after leading a rebellion against the Pequot Indians.
