#8 - NC has the greatest number of mountain peaks over 6000 feet east of the Rockies. The highest mountain east of the Mississippi River is Mt. Mitchell at 6684 feet. It was previously known as Black Dome before being measured by Dr. Elisha Mitchell in 1835. This was disputed by NC Senator Thomas Clingman (Clingman's Dome) claiming he had measured it first.
