Allemangel, Penn's Woods
May 22, 1759

My Dearest Colleen,

It has only been but two weeks since my last letter; and, to be sure, you've not yet received the first. I could not wait for fear that you would not know how seriuos my intentions should be.

Malcolm and i have been staying with cousins ThreeTales and Many Flags since our arrival here in Allemangel. The area has been claimed mostly by German folk, but there are a few Irish and Scottish families here too. They are all mostly common folk, and have small farms and herds of cattle upon them. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth, outside of Scotland of course, and is no wonder these people chose this area to make their homes. The hills and valleys are very similar to our Highlands, with the exception of an abundance of trees. The wild game is so plentiful that it is almost impossible to tramp the woods without stepping on a hare or fowl at every turn.

Flags' and Tales' father, The German Immagrant, has made quite a name for himself in this region as a provider of the most brilliant white tanned leather hides. Most of them are being purchased by the Crown's Commissary Officer for the making of sword belts and other white leather uniform articles. He uses a thick solution made of hardwood ashes and animal brains. After the hair has been scraped clean, the paste is rubbed into the hide to cure and soften into leather. The result is the most pliable and white tanned hide we have ever seen. Of course the Regiment is kitted with only black leather belts and baldricks, so his leather must be dyed first, before we can use it.

I do hope you will be successful in acquiring passage here. The cousins' parents have offered us a tract of land adjoining theirs, and it would be a fine place to start a new life. I have to speak to Malcolm to see what his feelings are on this subject. We have but a short time and our enlistment would be fulfilled. We could muster out of the Regiment here in the Colonies, and have the farm i have always dreamed about.

We leave for the Carolinas in a week, and Tales and Flags still have some lands to show us before we get underway. We head North tomorrow to the Chillisquaque and beyond, but must be back here in a few days to leave for the Southern Expedition.

Love as Always,
Davey
