Mornin' All,

#14 - The Highlands area of NC has the second highest rainfall of any region in the continental United States. Only the Pacific Northwest has more. In this same area the Whitewater River drops 411 feet (a scant 7 feet higher than our Hickory Nut Falls) in two levels over the side of Round Mountain to create Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall in eastern America. This area is fairly close to the Riverwalk area we'll be visiting, a bit more Southwest though on Hwy 64.

When I lived in Greenville, SC this waterfall was a favorite day trip for my daughter and me. It's a very steep hike down to the bottom where you can take off your shoes and wade in pools in the Whitewater River. The trail is part of the Foothills Trail, built in the 1970's by Duke Power Co. to "give something back" after flooding two valleys by building power plant dams to form Lake Jocassee and Lake Keowee - Keowee was the lower capital of the Cherokee Nation (more on that another time). The worst part is the trip back up! I have never had such sore leg muscles OR such wet socks (from sweating - these trips were pre-MistyMates era) and really wondered why those refreshing pools couldn't be at the top of the falls???? Some of the prettiest Fall foliage and waterfall pictures I've ever seen have been of these falls. A must-see on a Fall visit to NC!!!

The days to go now number *20*,
Then we'll gather and visit a-plenty!!!
