: A good book for those interested in the rough and ready heros and heroines of American literature and movies is "Virgin Land: The American West as Symbol and Myth" by Henry Nash Smith. Smith actually describes how the image of the American hero/heroine changed and developed according to public requirements and taste from the early 1800s to the 1960s. It's a fascinating look at the American psyche and throws a lot of light on exactly what we've been tossing around here for the last week - why Mann rewrote Cooper, what he thought he was accomplishing by doing it, and why we all watch the movie again and again and again.
