# 23 - The Esmerelda Inn (near Bat Cave, just up the road from Chimney Rock) was named after a character in a novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett while she was staying nearby. Lew Wallace, decorated Union Army General and Governor of the territory of New Mexico, came to the Esmerelda to work on the script for the stage play of his book, Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ. He finished it in room 109. The Inn burned in 1917 and again 1997. Only the chimney remained, but the Inn has been rebuilt and reopened a couple of years ago. The Esmerelda was the location of two movies in 1915, The Goddess and The Battle Cry. Many early movie stars stayed at the Esmerelda including Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Gloria Swanson, William S. Hart, and later Clark Gable was a guest.

Oh, we'll all be huggin' necks,
and Soldier #2 will be causin' wrecks,
As we converge on the Geneva in days numbering nine,
Get behind ME for loincloth viewing, cause I'm #1 in line!

HAPPY MONDAY (Arrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhh!).
