: I have started once again to read the actual novel by Cooper of LOTM.
: Hold on a minute - my eyes are crossed. (WHACK! hits self on side of head) There, that's better.

: Gayle, how on earth did you manage to get through it???????

: Have barely gotten started but already see differences and also identical quotes between movie and book. I am SURE GLAD Michael Mann left out the goofy, skinny psalm-singer!!!! I also like how he gave Magua a more manly introduction. Cooper has him kinda cowardly-like running away when questioned too closely by Hawkeye as Uncas and Ching are sneaking up on him. What he had to say about white men and their women to Major Duncan Heyward under his breath was a direct quote though. Cool.

: Cooper is kinda wordy. Was having trouble sleeping last night, but he's a great cure for that little ailment for sure.

: Hopefully I will have it read in its entirety this time. Shoot me if you like, but I still like the movie better than the book.

: I enjoyed Northwest Passage MUCH more than Cooper's writing, I can tell you that.

Bill,

I could have sworn I posted a response to this, but I don't see it, so maybe I've really lost my mind. Anyway, here's cheering you on and wishing you a new appreciation of Cooper (fat chance, right?) Just try to forget the movie, so you don't get confused. The tale Cooper told was a 1700s story, not a 1900s romance. All the characters are different, which may present some difficulties for you, but read it as Cooper told it. It is a GREAT adventcha in it's own right.

As Marcia says, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I love talking about Cooper's books. (So when is THAT news to anybody!!?)

Gayle
