Besides watching 1776, another way I sometimes celebrate the 4th of July is by reading The Revolution Remembered edited by John C. Dann. It is a collection of eyewitness accounts taken from the applications of veterans who applied for pensions under the Act of Congress of 1832. I especially enjoy the story told by Israel Trask about a regiment from seaboard New England encountering a regiment of Virginia troops decked out in "white linen frocks, ruffled and fringed." They were supposed to be on the same side, fighting the English, but ended up have a big fist fight with each other - only the appearance of George Washington stopped the battle.
