Most likely... yes. The two Redcoats you refer to were both enlisted. Enlisted men really had no value compared to the officers. They would have just been excess baggage and not worth the extra effort and risk of lugging around. The indians knew they could get something for Duncan since he was a "Blueblood".

Michael Mann wanted the British soldiers to look smaller than the Indians. During that period (and even to today's standards) Indians were considered to be some of the best guerilla fighters. They were a people not to be taken lightly in the art of war. Had the Indians not been so outnumbered and resourced... the outcome could have been very different. Plus, since the British were to be the "underdogs", what better way than to make them look smaller.

There were probably many other factors as well.
