Here's something that might help you get an idea of what was on the original [to be] theatrical release BEFORE Fox ordered it trimmed. This is from our Director's Cut page, supplied by a friend who was fortunate enough to see it early on:

"As best I can remember, the beginning was longer with more development of the characters. For example, there is a longer time spent in the Cameron's cabin where the whole explanation of the French battling the English, the need for the militia and which Indians are supporting whom and why is discussed. Hawkeye also talks about why he and Uncas and Chingachgook are not participating. It is a nice anti-war speech. There is also a longer time spent during the lacrosse match. And the arrival of Heyward with Cora is more detailed with him expressing his love and their past together. The journey through the woods, following Magua, is more involved. Alice becomes faint which is why Cora asks Heyward to stop, There is also a scene, somewhere hereabouts, that Magua plans the attack, so you know why he wants to continue walking. There are some scenes of great affection between Alice and Uncas and it is clear they love each other. And at the beginning Cora and Alice spend time with some of their father's army men so that when they arrive at William Henry, the characters they meet at the hospital etc. are not new to the audience. Now that is all I can remember at this time. The movie was just developed more and provided for better continuity, I think."

This, by the way, was shown only to the early-on test audiences. Never was released officially. Seems MM used bits of this in the Director's Cut DVD.

: Hello Everyone!

: You probably won't believe this, but I just discovered this website last night. It kept me up until 1:00 am (I have to get up for work at 5:00!) First of all, I'd like to thank those of you who maintain this site. It is wonderful! And though I know this subject has already been slashed, stabbed, and thrown off of a cliff numerous times, I feel I must speak on this. I saw this film in the theater when it was first released and I can still remember my first thought when the movie ended. "They are not telling us the REAL love story here. Something is missing." I did not even know that scenes between the characters of Uncas (deep, drooling sigh!)and Alice were cut out until I read it here. But even back then I just knew that something wasn't being told. So, my question to anyone willing to answer is this... Is there a 1992 version of this film that contains the edited "love scene" and if so, how can I get my grubby little hands on it? Please forgive me if this has already been addressed, but I just couldn't stay up any later to find out!! I appreciate any responses. Thank you, Genevieve
