I took a *very* close look at it yesterday before I posted, and it was my clear impression that it was a telescoping shaft similar to those collapsible drinking cups we had in the cub scouts.

(This was DVD, checked frame by frame with my son at the controls, and he saw the same thing.)

But, I'll double-check and get back to y'all.

: I think the way that Magua lets the tomahawk "slip" down and into his hand to grab the end, as Clabert says, the ridges on the handle may make it seem like a telescope. Never thought of that. Intersting. Never ceases to amaze me the different things one sees in this movie.
