Dear Morbidly Curious,

Historically speaking, eastern Indians, such as Pennsylvania's Seneca & numerous Algonquian inhabitants, generally buried their dead below ground. Burial scaffolds were the norm among the western plains Indians. This was one of those artistic licenses Michael Mann granted himself for LOTM. You can see the scaffold during the burial ground scene. Historical accuracy or cinematic effect? Always an issue for a filmmaker.
