Hello, Janice--

You are correct: Dog Soldiers were originally meant to be elite Cheyenne Warriors who wore long sashes to identify themselves as Dog Soldiers and also carried an arrow with which they would pin their sash to the ground and fight to the death. They were the last line of defense in any Cheyenne Village.

Over the years the term has been used in several other ways. One is to refer to K-9's during the Viet Nam war, it has been used to identify the bravest of any tribe, and of late has come to be the "enforcers" at a rendezvous or other living history event. They roam the camp watching for trespassers, unsafe acts such as open candles in tents, unattended fires, misbehaving kids, and so on.

I would say the coach named his team that because of the Dog Soldiers' bravery, tenacity, dedication and spirit, hoping it might rub off! (It's a "guy thing!")

Hope this helps you...

Pax Aye!
