On a vision quest (camping trip) in the Bear Haven camp in West Virginia, sitting by a campfire at night, I heard a stirring in the brush nearby. Remembering the name of the campsite, my mind raced... "Oh no---it's a B... it's a Be.. it's a Bea.................

.............it's a Beagle..?" Yes, a little lost beagle! That night a horrible thunderstorm blew in, and of course, I HAD to take in the little hound. She slept and snored all night---I didn't!! I tried to find the owners, but to no avail. That was 6 years ago, and Shelby has been my my pal, and I guess, my totem, ever since! Does she protect me? From squirrels and rabbits, I suppose. Last year, we adopted a beagle-brother, too.

Some people have an eagle, a hawk, a bear, a wolf, or some noble, brave animal as their totem. I'm not sure what having a beagle as a totem means...!

P.S.: I have provided a link to anyone interested in reading about a field study of endangered beagles in the wild!
