Rich asks:
: Well, what thinks YOU?!

Oh, Rich! Bless you for giving me a good opportunity to restate my oft-stated opinion! You KNOW MMMMarcia is in total agreement with both you and Claudia. Eric is wonderful as Uncas, no doubt. Perfectly cast, as is every single actor in the film. But the film belongs to Hawkeye/DDL right from the opening sequence. It's his story, through and through, as Cooper meant it to be. Uncas is, and always will be, a secondary character, albeit one of great importance. Hawkeye carries the story from the elk hunt through to the closing vistas, and lucky we were that Mann cast the superb Daniel Day-Lewis in the role. I've often wondered how he knew so instinctively what a perfect Hawkeye DDL would make, given the fact that his earlier roles were light years removed from this type of part/film. I've read that DDL really wanted the part & believed in the movie, so that may have been a big factor in Mann's decision, coupled with the knowledge that Daniel is a brilliant actor. Whatever the reasoning, the end result is heaven!

Hawkeye RULES!
