Well waddaya know.... Chief Gramatan

: Well waddaya know ... there's a street near me here in Mt. Vernon (NY) named Gramatan, and the church where I sing is on a hill called Sunset Hill in Bronxville.  Well, I've just discovered that at the street at the base of the hill is a plaque stating the following:

: "Sunset Hill where in the year 1666 Gramatan Chief of the Mohican Indians signed a deed transferring Eastchester to the White Man."

: I'll have to find out more about this deed -- I'll bet it was something in which the White Man wangled the Indians out of tons of land for a small pig or a bundle of guns and some smallpox!! Still,  I never thought how interesting the details of my neighborhood might be!   Does anyone have any info about this Chief Gramatan?
