: Hi, Pat...Gayle would be proud of BOTH of us...I'm now halfway through Deerslayer, too. I love the descriptions of the country and the Glimmerglass, but I just want to smack Chatty Natty up beside the head now and again. Geez, didn't Cooper understand that he could just explain to us what Natty was thinking once in awhile, without ALWAYS making it a soliloquy?? I'm wondering how the heck Natty ever earned his reputation as a deerslayer...talking aloud to himself all the time ought to have scared off every deer within miles!! But overall, I AM enjoying the book. I just try to pretend he's not jabbering so blamed much.

MMMMarcia,
You are so right! And didn't young Natty choose some strange moments to deliver those soliloquies? Poor Hetty! JFC made her preface each speech with a reminder that she was "feeble minded." If Hetty had no dialogue, someone else, reminded us. Also, didn't you get a little tired of their preoccupation with peoples' looks. I did enjoy it despite the faults.
You're right about the descriptions, they are lovely. And I don't blame poor Natty - it is Cooper's fault he is such a blabbermouth.
I have another gripe about the ending. We'll talk when you're finished.
What shall we read next?
Pat
