It seems Russel Means was trying to make a point of some sort, "....Michael Mann, of course, you know the white man, bigger is better ... so, he enlarged it by about four times, put a spike in it. He says he had seen a replica of that in a museum."

: : Still a little confused about size of the war club, but not about the attitude behind the remark.

//Kathy,

I see his point too, against the Rambo-ization of it.

: >>Kathy,

: it is true that the club used by Russell Means was a tad bit enlarged from its original size, the original "gunstock clubs" I've seen would have been aprox. 38" overall with a 7" spike.
: The ball-headed clubs shown were about right though [19" - 22" seems about the average length].
: The "gunstock" club was not that old of a design, by the way, it does not pre-date the arrival of the white man, it imitated the design of the "thundersticks" carried by the white men.

//Champ,

When Fergus Moorehead, a relative on my father's side, was taken on the Kitanning trail by Senecas from Niagara, they left a letter and "a war mallet." The letter expressly called it that and stated they were leaving it and why. Quite artistic yet efficient looking things from the pictures I've seen.
