Well, you've gone and spoiled ALL my fun! Actually, though, what you see in the film is the cousin of Mountain Laurel, Catawba Rhododendron.

To answer your question ... maybe running a well worn animal trail? Or, the canopy of old growth forests kept the forest floor relatively bare. Anyway, they WERE running, weren't they?! Artistic license, as well, PLUS Mark Baker's coaching!
