I don't claim to know much about Cooper's writings or his symbolism, but I do pay a lot of attention to films, and I tend to agree with Pat in this instance. I don't think Mann was much interested in symbolism in this movie. It seems to me it's a pretty clear-cut presentation of an adventure/romance yarn. Mann's Magua is, as Pat said, carrying a very personal grudge against Munro. Why else would he have been so set on putting (specifically!) Munro's children under the knife?

I fully realize things were told very differently in the books, but I just have a feeling with this movie, what you see is what you get. Personal loves, hatreds, vendettas, bravery and treachery.

Of course, I could be wrong...anyone else have an opinion on this interesting topic?
