For a more complete picture of hunters running after game see the captivity narrative of John Tanner. From KY and taken in Ohio. Lived among the Indians for many years. I did a longer discussion last year(?). When I see the joggers run past my house ( I prefer hiking) I always think that they would be the ones doing the hunting. There is a good novel that discusses the spiritual and psychological aspects of hunting called "The Purification Ceremony." I always wondered if a truly skilled hunter could somehow hypnotize the deer. In Flexner's bio of Johnson, he quotes Molly Brant as describing hunting as "the long road of the fleeing deer." Love the metaphors of the time.
Don't forget, the Cherokee fought in the CW too.
In the heart of John Hunt Morgan country.
