On this date, May 17, 1876, Custer & The Seventh Cavalry began their ill-fated trek from Fort Abraham Lincoln, in Dakota Territory (near present day Bismark, ND) with the purpose of rounding up all the "hostile" Sioux & Cheyenne somewhere in the Montana Territory. Armed with a false bravado and the intelligence that they would meet with 1200 warriors, or so, the trip was marked by premonitions & oddities.

As they left the Fort, with much fanfare, Custer's devoted wife, Libbie, remembered seeing the reflection of the blue clad column in the clouds above! That night, camped with the troops, she had a premonition of death "like I had never known before." She returned to the Fort the next day.

About 5 and a half weeks later, some 400+ miles away, this would become a grim reality on the ridges above the Little Bighorn River.
